Softball Drops Two to Keene State on Friday Afternoon

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Smith College softball team faced a tough day on the field, falling to Keene State in a pair of contests on Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Keene State 6, Smith 0 

The Pioneers struggled to generate offense against the Owls in the first game. Keene State jumped ahead early with a run in the fourth inning before breaking the game open with two additional runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

  • Pitching: Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) (7.0 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 5 K) took the loss while tossing the complete game. 
  • Offense: Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) recorded two hits for Smith during the first game.

Game 2: Keene State 5, Smith 3

Smith bounced back with a stronger offensive effort in game two but was unable to generate enough offense to overcome Keene. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord) reached on a single to centerfield, moved Elinor Washignton to second abse and allowed Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) to score. Smitha dded two more in the bottom half of the fourth inning kudos of a Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) SAC Fly and Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) knocking in another one.  

Keene State responded with a singular run in the top frame of the sixth inning and then added four more in the top half of the seventh inning to allow them to take the win. 

  • Pitching: Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 7 K) took the loss, however, held Keene State to only one run up until the seventh inning. 
  • Offense: Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) has two hits for Smith and scored two runs as well. 

Up Next

Smith (3-8) will look to regroup as they travel to Westfield State for a Wednesday afternoon matinee doubleheader.
