Smith Softball Battles in Doubleheader at WPI

WORCESTER, MA. – The Smith College softball team hit the road Friday afternoon for a NEWMAC doubleheader against WPI at Rooftop Field. Despite a strong effort in game two, the Pioneers dropped both contests, falling 10–2 in five innings in the opener before coming up just short in a 6–5 extra-inning battle in the nightcap.

Game One – WPI 10, Smith 2 (5 innings)
WPI capitalized early and often, scoring in each of the first four innings to build a 6–2 lead before a four-run fifth secured the run-rule victory. Smith's offense saw contributions from five different hitters, while Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) made the start in the circle. The Pioneers were held scoreless after the third inning and committed three errors defensively. Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) and Lily Hacket both knocked in runs for Smith.

Game Two – WPI 6, Smith 5 (8 innings)
Smith came out swinging in the second game, jumping ahead 4–0 through the first three innings. Sophomore Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) delivered a standout performance, launching a solo home run and driving in two runs. Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) added two doubles and two RBIs at the top of the order, while Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) reached base twice and scored twice. Despite leading for much of the game, the Engineers tied it late and pushed across the game-winning run in the eighth. Emilie Doty (Arlington, VA/Washington-Liberty) threw 5.0 solid innings in relief, striking out six.
