Smith Softball Splits Doubleheader with Wellesley

NORTHAMPTON, MA. - The Smith College softball team earned a split in NEWMAC action against visiting Wellesley College on Friday afternoon. After dropping the opener 10-2, the Pioneers bounced back with a dominant 5-2 victory in Game 2 at the Smith Softball Field.

Game 1: Wellesley 10, Smith 2 (6 innings)

Wellesley used a five run sixth inning to pull away and claim a 10-2 win. Smith would try and rally in the bottom half of the sixth but could not get enough going.

  • Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) tallied an RBI for the Pioneers in the bottom half of the sixth. The rally had started when Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) scored on a wild pitch.

  • In the circle, Emily Doty and Lindsay Bennett (Sanford, ME/Berwick Academy) combined efforts, but Wellesley's offense proved too strong down the stretch.

Game 2: Smith 5, Wellesley 2

Smith came out aggressive in Game 2, scoring all five of its runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back.

  • The rally started with Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) reaching base, followed by a single from Avery Knutson to set the table.

  • Lucy Allen (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston) came through with a two-RBI double to left center, putting Smith ahead early.

  • Piper Corey (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon Honors) kept the momentum going with an RBI single, while Lindsey Bennett delivered a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 5-1.

  • At the plate, Smith racked up eight hits, with six different players recording hits.

  • Taylor Ang (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) added a pinch-hit single later in the game, showing depth off the bench.

  • On the basepaths, Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) continued to create pressure, drawing three walks and stealing a base. Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) was outstanding in the circle, throwing a complete game. She limited Wellesley to five hits, allowed just two earned runs, and struck out three.
