NORTHAMPTON, MA - Coaching isn't just a job; it's a calling that demands dedication, perseverance, and a genuine passion for the sport.
My journey as a coach has been a testament to these principles, and I'm excited to bring this passion to Smith College as the new head coach of the Swim & Dive program.
A team-first approach
--------------------
Throughout my career, I've always believed in the power of teamwork and the importance of creating a supportive environment for my athletes. One of my most memorable moments as a coach was winning the America East Championship in 2025 with the University of New Hampshire.
That victory was particularly special because it came after a narrow second-place finish the previous year. It was a testament to the team's growth, resilience, and commitment to winning the right way. They learned valuable lessons from that loss, which fueled their determination for the 2024-2025 season.
Another significant chapter in my coaching journey was helping Stonehill College launch its varsity program during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a trial by fire, but witnessing the team's perseverance and dedication was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me of the importance of staying focused on the process and treating one another with respect and support.
Family first
------------
Outside of coaching, my life revolves around my family. I'm a proud father to three wonderful children, and spending time with them is my greatest joy. Whether it's playing at the playground, going on hikes, or simply enjoying each other's company, family time is precious to me.
I'm also fortunate to have a supportive wife who shares in these moments and occasionally joins me for a much-needed date night.
For those who know me, they can attest to my straightforward and genuine nature. When I ask someone how they're doing, I truly care about their response. I believe in open and honest communication, both in my personal life and in my coaching career.
What's next?
------------
As I embark on this new chapter at Smith College, I'm filled with excitement and anticipation. I'm honored to be part of the Smith athletics and campus community, and I'm eager to contribute and make a positive impact.
The Swim & Dive program at Smith College holds immense potential, and I'm confident that special things are on the horizon. I invite the Smith community to join us at our home meets and local away meets, as they won't want to miss being a part of our story.
Finding mentorship
------------------
Throughout my coaching career, I've been fortunate to have mentors who have guided and inspired me. It was a struggle in my early years as a coach because I didn't have a mentor to lean on. However, I've come to realize the immense value of mentorship and how it has expedited my growth as a coach.
One of my early mentors was my dad, who played a significant role in shaping my love for sports. His unwavering support and encouragement inspired me to pursue a coaching career. I've also had the privilege of meeting great coaches like Jeff Dugdale, Andy Bashor, and David Sheets through the CSCAA mentoring network. Their guidance and expertise have been invaluable in my coaching journey.
Interestingly, two non-swimming coaches have had a profound impact on my coaching philosophy. Steve Magness, a former track and field coach and author, has taught me the importance of taking an athlete-first approach. His book, "Peak Performance," co-authored with Brad Stulberg, is a must-read for anyone seeking to excel in their field.
Another influential figure in my coaching journey is Dr. Rick Shavone, arguably one of the greatest diving coaches our country has seen. His athlete-first approach and constant self-reflection have been motivating for me. He often reminds me to rest athletes when in doubt and never blame them for setbacks. His willingness to take responsibility and continuously improve his coaching methods has been a guiding principle in my own coaching career.
I'm excited and humbled to be a part of the Smith College community. It's an opportunity to not only coach an amazing group of student-athletes but also to contribute and make a positive impact on the team and the community as a whole.
As I look to the future, I'm filled with anticipation for the incredible things that lie ahead.
I invite everyone to be a part of our story and join us in creating something special with the Smith College Swim & Dive program.
