Get to know Abigail Wrentmore (Wayland, MA/Wayland) beyond the box score. We caught up with the sophomore defender on the Smith College lacrosse team to talk about her life as a student-athlete, favorite parts of Smith and academic interests.
How did you get started in your sport?
I was first introduced to lacrosse by my great-uncle, who was passionate about college sports (especially lacrosse and football). Watching his excitement for the game sparked my own interest, and before long, I was obsessed and eventually started playing myself.
What does being a Smith athlete mean to you?
Being a Smith athlete means receiving coaching, training, and equipment specifically designed for women—allowing me to reach my full potential. I can lift more and push myself harder when equipment and training plans are built for me. It's an empowering and truly special experience.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or team traditions?
I'm the kind of player who locks in with headphones on before a game. My final song before stepping onto the field is always "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi!Â
What's been your proudest moment as a student athlete?
So far, my proudest moment was being elected by my teammates to serve on our leadership committee. Being held in that esteem by individuals I respect so much meant everything to me, and I am incredibly grateful and proud of that achievement.
How do you balance academics and athletics at Smith?Â
I balance academics and athletics at Smith with the support of my coaches, who genuinely care about my success both on and off the field. They regularly check in about how classes are going, and during challenging times, they help me create a plan to stay organized and get back on track.
Do you have a favorite spot on campus to unwind?
The Cushing Pool Room is my go-to spot! My friends and I love taking a break from studying or training to unwind with a game of pool.
If your teammates could describe you in three words, what would they say?
Competitive, Funny, Leader
What is your favorite thing about your house at Smith?
I live in Jordan House in the Quad, and I love being in such a vibrant, social area! There's always something happening, and with so many people around, I'm constantly running into friends and making new connections.
How did Smith's open curriculum help you explore academically?
My academic journey at Smith has entailed a ton of trial and error. I considered majors ranging from Government to Biology before ultimately choosing Quantitative Economics with a Government minor. Smith's open curriculum gave me the freedom to explore a wide range of subjects, discovering what I was passionate about and what wasn't the right fit. Taking classes across so many disciplines helped me find a major that truly resonates with me and prepares me for life after graduation.
What do you like to do on the weekends?
Weekends are my time to recharge. I love painting, hanging out with friends, watching movies, and just relaxing. With weekdays packed full of classes and practices, I really value this time to unwind before the week ahead.
Who has been your favorite professor at Smith and why?
Econ professors Terry-Ann Craigie (my advisor) and Lucie Schmidt are my favs! Both of these teachers are so passionate about their work and really keep me engaged during class. Right now I'm taking Intro to Stats and Econometrics with Craigie and Gender and Econ with Schmidt, and both have been super interesting so far! I love the way they structure lectures and encourage participation through discussion and examples.Â
