SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Smith College women's track and field team wrapped up two days of competition at the New England Division III Championships on Saturday, paced by senior Lyda Martin's (San Antonio, TX/Lee) runner-up finish in the 1500-meter run and a trio of scoring efforts from the pole vault group at Springfield College.
Martin headlined the weekend for the Bears, crossing the line in 4:36.00 to take second place in the 1500 and add 8 points to Smith's total. Junior Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) placed 17th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.20, while fellow junior Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) finished 25th in the same event in 2:25.57.
On the Runways
The Smith pole vault group accounted for 9 of the team's points across the meet. Senior Kerry Seekamp (Destin, FL/Fort Walton Beach) cleared 3.46 meters to finish fourth and earn 5 points for the Bears. Senior Jillian da Costa Pinto (West Hartford, CT/Conard) followed in fifth at 3.31 meters for 4 points, and sophomore Cady Sorensen rounded out the Smith vault contingent with a 12th-place clearance of 3.01 meters.
Around the Track
Senior Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) posted a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 59.42. Smith's "A" 4x100-meter relay squad placed 12th overall, stopping the clock at 50.46 seconds.
