Doyle Steps Down as Head Coach of the Smith Rowing Program

June 01, 2026

NORTHAMPTON - Smith College Director of Athletics and Recreation Kristin Hughes has announced that head coach Clare Doyle will be stepping down from her role as head coach of the rowing program.

"I want to thank Kristin Hughes and the entire Smith College community for an outstanding 11 years with the program," said Doyle. "I am grateful to the athletes, alums, families, and Smith Athletics staff for their unwavering support and belief in the program. It has been an honor to coach the Smith Rowing team and I look forward to seeing how the program continues to grow in the future!"

Doyle served in this position for 9 years after beginning her time as a graduate assistant coach with the program from 2015-2017.

A two-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year, Doyle guided the Bears to the 2024 NEWMAC Championship and appearance at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship. In 2023, Smith earned a program-best fourth place finish at the Head of the Charles. Doyle oversaw numerous milestones for the program, including the construction of a new boathouse in 2019 and the establishment of a program endowment in 2026.

A national search for the next head coach of Smith rowing will begin in the coming weeks.
