Bears host Ellen O'Neil Invitational on Saturday

September 18, 2026

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — The Smith College cross country team returns home Saturday to host the Ellen O'Neil Invitational, with the women's 6,000-meter race set for a 10 a.m. start on the Bears' home course. Springfield College, Babson College, Hudson Valley Community College and Albany College of Pharmacy are among the teams in the field, with the men racing 8,000 meters.

The meet doubles as a first look at the layout that will decide the 2026 NEWMAC Championship, which Smith hosts on the same course Oct. 31. Springfield and Babson are conference opponents, giving the Bears an early measuring stick against two teams they will see again in five weeks. It is also Smith's first race at 6,000 meters this fall after opening at the 5K distance.

Smith arrives off a fifth-place team finish at the Trinity Invitational, where it scored 142 points behind a tight front pack. Lucy Kreipke (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) led the Bears for the second consecutive season opener, covering the 5,000-meter course in 19:24.3 to place 14th. First-year Hadley Smith (North Yarmouth, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) was 16th in 19:32.6 in her collegiate debut, and sophomore Avery Maiese rounded out the top three in 19:41.2.

Senior Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) (20:17.3) and junior Amelia Gronert (20:33.8) closed out the scoring five as Smith averaged 19:53 across its top five and packed its first and fifth runners within 1:09 — the fourth-tightest spread in the field. The Bears return nine runners from a group that placed fourth at last year's NEWMAC Championship.

Smith is back in action Saturday, Oct. 3, at the KSC Invitational in Keene, N.H.
