NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team begins a string of six consecutive NEWMAC games with a visit to Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, October 1, at 4 p.m. Four of the six games will be on the road, and the test begins with the Engineers, who have played to a pair of scoreless, double-overtime ties in each of their first two NEWMAC games.
Last Meeting: October 2, 2010 - MIT scored four times in the first half to roll to a 6-0 win.
Last Smith Win: October 7, 2005 - Smith scored in the 7th and 12th minutes, and that was all they would need for a 2-0 win that would up their record to 6-3-1, and 3-1 in the NEWMAC.
Smith Overview: After playing five of their first seven games at home, Smith begins a critical stretch of games in NEWMAC play as they attempt to return to the conference tournament. Despite an 0-2 start in the league, a win against MIT would get the Pioneers back in the race for a playoff berth.
MIT Overview: The Engineers are a low scoring team, having scored a mere nine goals in eight games this season. Despite the lack of offense, MIT is unbeatean in their last six games, including a 0-0 tie against No. 15 Springfield College in their most recent contest. MIT makes up for the lack of scoring goals by letting in very few - only five goals have been scored against the Engineers this year.
Smith Player to Watch: Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga./Galloway) - Houser played for the Pioneers in 2006 and 2007, piling up 17 goals in two seasons. After three years off, she's returned to the team and started two of the three games she's played in.
MIT Player to Watch: Meghan Wright - the junior netminder boasts a 0.59 goals against average, has a save percentage of .909, and four shutouts.
