Game Preview: Soccer vs. Wellesley

October 15, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (1-9, 0-5 NEWMAC) resumes play after more than a week since their last game, when they pay a visit to Wellesley College (3-8-3, 2-3 NEWMAC) on Saturday.  The Pioneers and Blue begin at 1 p.m.

Last Meeting:  The Blue scored twice in the first 12 minutes and added a third with 10 minutes left in the game for a 3-0 win on October 16, 2010.

Last Smith Win: Danielle Schmandt scored the only goal of the game with 12:06 remaining to give Smith a 1-0 win in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC tournament on October 29, 2006.  Coincidentally, it was the second straight game where the teams met, as the Blue and Pioneers closed out the regular season with a 2-1 victory for Smith.

Smith Overview: Smith has not taken the pitch in a competitive matchup since October 7, when they lost a tough 3-2 game at Clark.  The seventh loss of the season by a single goal, Smith led 2-1 after Meredith Peck (Plymouth, N.H./Holderness School) headed home Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown)'s free kick, but gave up two goals in the final 12 minutes.

Wellesley Overview: The Blue are unbeaten in their last two games after a three game losing streak.  Wellesley earned a 1-0 win over Coast Guard, and followed that up with a double-overtime, scoreless tie against Fitchburg State.  Wellesley currently sits in the sixth and final playoff spot, with four games to go.

Smith Player to Watch: Free from an injury that kept her from playing last year, Ewa Januszkiewicz (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) has provided a threat off the bench on the wing.

Wellesley Player to Watch: First year goalie Claire Cerda boasts a 1.22 goals against average, and has given up 10 goals on the year.

Did you know?  Today's match features two of the lowest scoring teams in the league.  Smith has scored 10 goals in 10 games, while Wellesley has managed just 11 goals in 14 games.
