Game Preview: Soccer vs. Coast Guard

October 18, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team goes looking for their second win in a row when they travel to New London, Conn., to take on the United States Coast Guard Academy tonight.  Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last Meeting: A goal from Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) was the difference as Smith earned their first conference win of the season with a 1-0 triumph over the Bears on October 19, 2010.  The game was also notable for being Jenn Chang (Seoul, South Korea/Wilbraham & Monson)'s first ever career start in goal, substituting for an injured Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast)Chang finished with seven saves, including a critical stop on a shot from Lynn Scrayshuen early in the second half.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers ended a nine game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Wellelsey College on Saturday afternoon.  Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) scored the game's only goal five minutes before halftime, latching onto a through ball from K.K. Lane (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and beating the Wellesley goalie to score her team leading fifth goal of the season.  The win gives Smith an outside shot of qualifying for the NEWMAC tournament.  The Pioneers will need to win all their remaining games, starting with tonight, to finish with 12 points.  The top six all earn postseason berths, and only once in the last four years has the sixth placed team finished with more than 12 points.

Coast Guard Overview: Some of the same hard luck that Smith suffered earlier this year has befallen the Bears, who have lost four consecutive games by one goal, including a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Mount Holyoke that was the fourth game of their current six game winless streak.  The Bears have lost five in a row, with the only point gained during that time a scoreless, double-overtime tie with WPI.  Coast Guard sits in last place, tied with WPI with an 0-5-1 league record.

Smith Player to Watch: Although Chang is unlikely to play in goal against the Bears this time, she remains a steady performer in the midfield for the Pioneers.

Coast Guard Player to Watch: Holly Moore is the team's playmaker, setting up four goals and scoring two game winners this season.

Did you know? 12 different players have scored at least one goal for Coast Guard this season.
