Game Preview: Soccer vs. Springfield

October 04, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (1-7, 0-3 NEWMAC) will play the second of three NEWMAC games in less than a week when they play host to Springfield College (5-3-1, 2-0-1 NEWMAC) on Tuesday, September 4.  The Pioneers and Pride get underway at 4 p.m.

Last Meeting: October 5, 2010 - Jackie Moscardelli scored in the 66th minute to give Springfield a 1-0 victory.  Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) made 10 saves for Smith.

Last Smith Win: On November 12, 2006, Smith defeated Springfield 4-0 to claim the ECAC New England Championship.  Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga./Galloway) and Brittoni Famous each scored twice, include a pair 20 seconds apart, to give Smith their third ECAC title and first since 1987.  The Pioneers defeated the Pride three times that season; in addition to winning the ECAC Championship, the Pioneers won the regular season matchup 1-0 and the NEWMAC semifinal playoff meeting 2-1.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers suffered their fifth one-goal loss of the season in tough circumstances on Saturday.  MIT got the only goal of the game in the 34th minute after officials ruled that Jenna BiCierro's attempted goalline clearance had not kept the ball from crossing the line. The Pioneers had chances to level the score, but could not beat Engineers goalie Meghan Wright.

Springfield Overview: The Pride sit in second place after three rounds of NEWMAC play, having earned a 3-0 win over Wellesley in their last game.  Springfield has been ranked as high as No. 15 in the country this season, and started off the year by winning four of their first five games.  Since then, Springfield has only managed one win and one tie to go with losses to Amherst and Williams.

Smith Player to Watch:  Meredith Peck (Plymouth, N.H./Holderness School) - Peck had two chances to level the score against MIT on Saturday, and is a dangerous forward off the bench.

Springfield Player to Watch: Katie Mantie leads the team with six goals and two assists.

Did you know? This is only the fourth road game of the year for Springfield.
