Game Preview: Soccer vs. Clark

October 07, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (1-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) begins a string of three consecutive games on the road when they make the trip to Worcester, Mass., to take on Clark University (3-7-1, 1-2-1 NEWMAC) on Friday afternoon.

Last Meeting: Clark scored in the 13th and 75th minutes to claim a 2-0 win on October 8, 2010.

Last Smith Win: Janine Olthuis netted the game winner 5:14 into overtime as Smith beat the Cougars 2-1 on October 17, 2007.  Valerie Driscoll opened the scoring in the 8th minute for Smith, and Clark tied the game through Liz Adamcik 11th minute.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers fell to Springfield by a 1-0 count on Tuesday, the sixth loss by one goal this season for Smith.  Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) made 12 saves, and Jenna BiCierro and K.K. Lane (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) both had goal bound efforts blocked for Smith.  As noted, this game is the first of three games away from home for Smith, along with five of the final six.  While Smith sits in last place going into this weekend's games, a playoff berth is not wholly out of the question, considering of the five NEWMAC games left, four are against the teams directly in front of Smith in the league standings (Clark, Wellesley, Coast Guard, and WPI).

Clark Overview: After winning two of their first three games, the Cougars have stumbled over the last month.  Since September 10, Clark is 1-6-1, with the only win being a 1-0 victory over Coast Guard on October 1.  Included in that streak were four consecutive games where the Cougars failed to score, and during that time, Clark has only found the net three times in eight games.

Smith Player to Watch: K.K. Lane (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) has moved into the starting lineup over the last four games, getting more involved in Smith's offense as she grows into her starting role.

Clark Player to Watch: Erin Peete has started every game for the Cougars, and has marshalled a defense that has allowed only 14 goals in 11 games.

Did you know? The Pioneers are not alone in tough defeats - Eastern Mennonite (Pa.) has also lost six one goal games this season, and Rutgers-Camden is 0-8-1 this year, having not scored a goal in any of their nine games this season.
