Game Preview: Soccer vs. Babson

September 24, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (1-4, 0-1 NEWMAC) resumes New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play when they play host to Babson College, (6-1-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) who sport the best record among NEWMAC teams thus far this season.
Last Meeting: September 25, 2010 - Babson scored a goal in each half to record a 2-0 win over Smith.  Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) made 13 saves for Smith, who were outshot 29-3 in the contest.

Last Smith Win:
October 29, 2005 - In a NEWMAC quarterfinal matchup, No. 5 Smith outshot the No. 4 Beavers 20-4, but were made to play eight extra minutes before Monroe Peterson stabbed home an overtime winner as Smith won 1-0 to advance to the NEWMAC semifinal.  Smith was the only higher seeded team to win their opening round game that season.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers lost their fourth consecutive game on Wednesday night.  The 1-0 defeat to Elms was the third time in four games that Smith lost by a single goal, following a 1-0 loss to Lyndon State (September 10) and 2-1 to New England College (September 13).  In all three of those games, Smith has outshot their opponents.

Babson Overview: The Beavers lost their first game of the season, a 1-0 loss to William Smith on September 3.  Since then, the Beavers have been on a roll, winning their last five games and six of seven, with the only blemish being a scoreless tie against Salem State.  Each of the last five wins have come by a single goal, including matching 2-1 double-overtime wins over Framingham State and Endicott.

Babson Player to Watch: Lisa Wojnar - the senior has started all eight games in goal, pitching five shutouts and allowing only three goals on the year.

Smith Player to Watch:
Cara Gubbins (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) - back on the team after a year abroad in 2010, Gubbins gets in the thick of the action up front, taking more shots than anyone on the team save Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall).

Did you know?
Babson is used to low scoring games - only once in their eight games this year have they scored more than two goals.
