September 11, 2012

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team worked its way back to .500 with an 11-2 non-conference victory over Elms College on Tuesday afternoon.   Smith improves to 2-2 win the win, while Elms falls to 1-3 with the defeat.

The Blazers opened the scoring when Julie Hurley beat Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) at the 4:36 mark for her first goal of the season, but Smith answered through Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who finished off a pass from Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) for her ninth of the season.  Stein and DeJesus switched roles for Smith's next goal, as DeJesus found the back of the cage three minutes later.

Just over a minute later, Elms tied the game.  The Blazers were awarded a penalty stroke, which Kristina Kopyscinski converted to level the scores at two.

Stein put Smith back in front at the 23:04 mark of the contest, again from a feed from DeJesus, and Caroline Noonan (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) finished off the half with a hat trick, getting all three goals in a five minute span to send Smith into the break up 7-2.

Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.)) added to the Smith total just 53 seconds into the second half, and Stein scored twice before DeJesus netted her second of the day to cap the scoring.  DeJesus finished the game with five assists, breaking her own mark of three set a season ago.  Stein finished the game with 13 points, which ties her own school record set last season and matched against Bay Path on September 8.
