Box Score LYNDON, Vt.--The Smith College soccer team closed out their season opening road trip with a 3-0 win over Lyndon State College on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers snap a two game losing skid to up their record to 2-2, while Lyndon State suffered their third straight loss to fall to 2-3.
The Pioneers were boosted by a pair of players scoring their first collegiate goal while outshooting the Hornets 34-6, including an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal. Senior
Chelby Wakefield (East Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) got the only goal Smith would need in the seventh minute of the game off of
Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown)'s corner kick. Smith could have added more in the first half as
Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan),
Allie Rooney (Ludlow, Mass./Cathedral), and
Lizzy Jarrett (Ellicott City, Md./St. Pauls Schools for Girls) all tested Lyndon State goalie Dannika Dobrowski, who finished with 15 saves.
Smith doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, as senior
Ewa Januszkiewicz (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) popped in her own rebound for a 2-0 advantage, and Rooney put the icing on the cake in the 87th minute, finishing off a through ball from Hitt for her second of the season.
Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) earned the win between the pipes, making two saves in 82:15.
Annabel Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) played the final 7:45 for Smith, making one save. Smith will make their home debut on Saturday, September 15, hosting Mount Holyoke College in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. Lyndon State will take on Castleton State College on September 15 at 1 p.m.
