NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (4-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) will try to make it two wins out of two league games when they travel to Springfield College (4-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. Seven of the next eight games for Smith are league games, beginning with today.
Last Meeting: Springfield edged past Smith by a 1-0 score on October 4, 2011.
Last Smith Win: On November 12, 2006, Smith defeated Springfield 4-0 to claim the ECAC New England Championship.
Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga./Galloway) and Brittoni Famous each scored twice, include a pair 20 seconds apart, to give Smith their third ECAC title and first since 1987. The Pioneers defeated the Pride three times that season; in addition to winning the ECAC Championship, the Pioneers won the regular season matchup 1-0 and the NEWMAC semifinal playoff meeting 2-1.
Smith Overview: Smith has won three straight games by matching 3-0 scores, the most recent of which was a victory over Elms College on Wednesday.
Allie Rooney (Ludlow, Mass./Cathedral),
Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan), and
GiGi Ross (Colt's Neck, N.J./Colt's Neck) scored the goals for Smith, which has not allowed a goal in 319:44.
Springfield Overview: The Pride are also 4-2, with their only losses to a pair of nationally ranked teams. Two weeks ago, Springfield fell to No. 23 Brandeis by a 2-0 score, and this past week lost 1-0 to No. 6 Amherst on a goal with less than 10 minutes to play. Springfield needed double-overtime to get past Clark in their league opener last weekend, finally breaking down the Cougars for a 1-0 win.
Smith Player to Watch: Allie Rooney (Ludlow, Mass./Cathedral) has scored in three straight contests, and added her first assist of the year against Elms.
Springfield Player to Watch: Goalie Erin Greenstein sports a goals against average of .51, making 17 saves in six games.
Did you know? Springfield is the two-time defending regular season champion, with tournament titles in 2005, 2008, and 2010. The Pride received an at-large big to the NCAA tournament last year, advancing to the second round before being eliminated by Johns Hopkins.
