Soccer Win Streak Snapped By Springfield

September 22, 2012

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Nina Vital scored just 12 seconds into the game and the Springfield College women's soccer team never looked back as it bested Smith College, 2-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

With the win, Springfield is now 5-2, 2-0 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 4-3, 1-1.

Off the opening kickoff, Smith took the ball and tried to work it around the back. However, Vital took advantage of a Smith miscue, taking the ball just inside middle of the box before tapping it past Pioneer goalie Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) from eight yards out.

The Pride maintained the majority of the ball control for the entire match, posting 16 shots while holding the visitors without an attempt on goal. Springfield also took six corners.

Springfield tacked on an insurance marker with 19:34 left in regulation on a strike from Jessica Miller. After Nicole Fowler delivered a cross from the left corner of the box, Miller one-time a left-footed strike into the right corner for Springfield's second goal of the afternoon.

Erin Greenstein posted yet another shutout, as she did not face a shot in the game. Norris tallied five saves in net in the loss.

The Pride is back in action on Wednesday when it clashes with Williams at 7:00 pm in a non-conference matchup.  Smith will also play on Wednesday, traveling to Westfield State for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
