Soccer Falls To Nationally Ranked MIT

October 19, 2013

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--No. 19 MIT got a pair of late goals to pull award for a 3-1 win over host Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer game on Saturday.  Smith falls to 4-7-2, with a 2-3-1 NEWMAC record, while MIT improves to 9-2-3, and 5-1-1 within the NEWMAC.

MIT tested Smith goalie Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) early in the first half, but the Smith keeper turned away shots from Ambika Krishnamachar and Michelle Battipaglia in the early going.  After Faith O'Brian was stifled by another save from Lynch, Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) was denied at the other end.

The Engineers made the breakthrough five minutes before halftime.  Elena Gianotas sent in a corner kick that was put home by Victora Gregory for a 1-0 lead that would last into the break.

Smith responded in the second half, and got their reward in the 66th minute.  Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) played a low corner kick, and Houston swept home her seventh goal of the year.  It was the first goal Smith had scored against MIT since 2005, a span of eight games.

MIT had the lead back four minutes later.  A defensive mixup left the ball for Jessica Ong to pounce for what would be the go-ahead goal.

MIT wrapped up the game in the 81st minute.  Smith was whistled for a handball in the penalty area, and Rachel Dias Carlson dispatched the penalty kick for a 3-1 lead.

Lynch finished with six saves in net for Smith.  Lauren Ulmann and Tamar Wesley split the goalkeeping duties for MIT; Ulmann made one save and Wesley made three.

Smith gets right back in action on Tuesday, October 22, hosting WPI at 3:45 pm.  MIT will welcome Salem State for a non-conference game that begins at 4 p.m. on the same day.
