Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Seven different Pioneers tallied at least one point as the Smith College soccer team posted an 8-1 victory over the Emerson College Lions Sunday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
With the win, the Pioneers match their win total from a season ago and improve to 5-5-1, including a 3-2 record in NEWMAC play. The Lions of Emerson fall to 4-7-1, and 1-3 in conference action. The last time that Smith scored eight goals in a game was on Sept. 26, 2000, when the Pioneers defeated the Lyons of Mount Holyoke, 9-2. That win also marked the last seven-goal victory for Smith.
Junior
Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) started the scoring just five minutes into the first half when she took a cross from classmate
GiGi Ross (Colt's Neck, N.J./Colt's Neck) and one-touched it past Emerson goalkeeper Melanie Escobar.
Emerson answered with a goal of their own, as junior Tayllar Righini skied a shot over the outstretched hands of Smith goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) to tie the contest in the 28
th minute, 1-1.
Smith's offense went quiet for the rest of the first half but picked it up quickly at the start of the second half with a goal by Ross assisted by sophomore
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) in the 49th minute. This was Ross's first goal and Foody's first assist of the season.
Three minutes later, it was senior
Jenna Bicierro (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) who took a feed from Ross and found the back of the net to put Smith ahead, 3-1. In the 55
th minute, Ross scored her second goal of the contest on a cross from senior
Olivia Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bentley) to push Smith's advantage to three. The assist was the first point recorded for Ruiz in a Pioneers uniform.
Houston, Ross and Bicierro each netted two goals, while Ross also added three assists. Her seven total points were the most by a Pioneer in a single contest since Eleanor Theurer tallied eight in Smith's 5-2 win over Elms College on Sept. 22, 2010 while her three assists equaled Catherine Peo's three helpers in Smith's 6-2 win over Roger Williams on Sept. 11, 2004.
Foody and first year
Vicki Kraft (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Our Lady of the Lourdes) also added a goal apiece for Smith, while sophomore
Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) notched her first assist of the season on Houston's second goal.
Hall picked up her fifth win of the season in between the pipes and finished with one stop. Smith outshot Emerson, 19-11, and attempted three corners. Escobar made five saves in net for the Lions.
Sunday's contest was just the second-ever meeting between Smith and Emerson, and the first win for the Pioneers over the Lions.
Smith next travels to Cambridge, Mass. on Oct. 18 to take on the MIT Engineers, while the Lions return to action Tuesday to host the Wheaton College Lyons at 6 p.m.
