Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College's Olivia Kerester scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the first overtime to lead the third-seeded Beavers over the sixth-seeded Smith College Pioneers in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament Tuesday afternoon.
The win advances Babson (12-3-3) to Saturday's semifinals, where they will face tonight's winner of the second-seeded Springfield College Pride and the seventh-seeded Coast Guard Academy Bears. Smith ends its season with a 6-8-3 overall mark.
Jessica DiPhillippo started the game-winning drive, carrying the ball up the right side of the field and sending a through ball to Kerester who beat Smith's goalkeeper to the left post, recording her first goal of the season.
The Pioneers led throughout the first half, as sophomore
Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and sophomore
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) worked a nice give-and-go that found Foody's eventual shot sailing over the outstretched arms of the Beavers keeper in the fifth minute to stake Smith to a 1-0 lead. The lead marked the first held by Smith over Babson since Oct. 29, 2005.Â
In the first half, Smith compiled a 6-4 shots advantage, but Babson had an edge in the possession battle. The Pioneers had a good opportunity to add to their lead in the 35th minute when a bullet off the foot of senior
Jenna Bicierro (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) in front of the box sailed just over the crossbar.
In the second half, Babson turned up the pressure, breaking through in the 49
th minute as Kerester found Meghan Tyson for her seventh goal of the season. The Pioneers threatened down the stretch, with Smith's last shot, a
Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) attempt, handled cleanly by Babson's Melina Kapotsis.
The Beavers wasted little time in the extra frame, using their first scoring attempt to tally the golden goal and advance to the NEWMAC semifinals.
With the loss, the Pioneers' 2014 season comes to a close. The NEWMAC Tournament appearance marked the first for Smith since 2007.Â
