Babson's Late First Half Surge Sinks Lacrosse

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team held a 5-4 lead until Babson closed out the first half with a 7-0 run en route to a 18-9 victory over the Pioneers in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.
 
Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led the Pioneers with three goals and three caused turnovers while Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) followed with a pair. Olivia Timmins (Medford, Mass./Medford), Anne Zawacki (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra), Kate Detrick (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy) and Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) all scored once. Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) corralled seven draw controls and Zawacki came up with three. Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) amassed a career-high 18 saves and now totals a league-leading 139 on the year.
 
Babson was paced Rachel Secrist's seven goals. Misha Beatty and McKenzie Tucci added two each as Kayla Farina, Francesca Giovanucci, Ali Korinis, Delaney Carroll and Katie McKenna each scored once. Farina, Giovanucci and Tucci combined to dole out four assists. Korinis led all student-athletes with three ground balls as she and Giovanucci each caused a pair of turnovers. Secrist and Beatty were credited with four draw controls apiece as McKenna scooped up three.  Julie Baharestani halted eight shots on the day.
 
Beatty scooped up the opening draw and immediately scored to take a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds into the contest. Timmins responded at 27:29 to even it up. The two squads traded jabs until Lillquist scored at 23:07 and 17:47 to give the Pioneers their first lead. After Bester scored with 13:26 before the break, Babson tied it up at 5-5 as Giovanucci fed Tucci as the clock showed 12:35. The Beavers scored the next six and held an 11-5 advantage at the intermission.
 
Smith scored four of the 11 goals in the second half. Zawacki answered Beatty's goal with 27:44 left. Lillquist later used her 39th of the season to deny Secrist three in-a-row at the 20:08 mark. Estes found the back of the net at 12:32 while Detrick scored for the first time in three games with a marker at 3:04.
 
The Pioneers had a slight edge in the draw control department (15-14) courtesy of an 11-6 margin in the first half. Smith went 3-for-12 as Babson went 0-for-5 in free position shots.
 
Both Smith (2-12, 0-5) and Babson (5-8, 4-1) are back in action on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. as the Pioneers host Mount Holyoke and Babson heads to Wellesley.
