NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College swimming and diving team faces two conference opponents in a quadrangular meet at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday evening. The Pioneers will face the Engineers, along with Babson College and Brandeis University in individual dual meets.
Last Year's Meet: Smith defeated Babson College, 251-35 and Brandeis University, 170-121 before falling to the hosts from WPI, 202-98.
The Engineers: This is the first home meet of the season for WPI, who posted a record 919 points to fuel a program-best second-place finish at the Worcester City Championships last Saturday. Kristen Bender was named Co-Diver of the Week while the 200-yard medley relay team secured the Relay Team of the Week nod. Bender totaled a pair of runner up scores on the 1-meter (243.44) and 3-meter (254.02) diving board while the foursome of junior Thea Reymann, freshman Carol Wang, junior Jennifer Day and senior Emily Martin teamed up to deliver the Engineers first-ever relay win at the Worcester City Championships with a time of 1:43.22.
The Beavers: The Babson women (0-1) won four events and posted six runner-up finishes in their opening meet of the season against UMass Dartmouth last Saturday. Senior Paris Ekman was victorious in both diving events and first-year Tirza Rentovich won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Ekman was selected as the NEWMAC Co-Diver of the Week.
The Judges: Brandeis (0-4) looks for their first win of the season after losses to Rochester and Division I Canisius in a double dual meet on October 22. Sophomore Kylie Herman posted top-four results in three events, while first-year Natalya Wozab came in fourth in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke
The Pioneers: Smith opened the season at the non-scoring Smith Relays last weekend. The Pioneers took first place in six out of the 12 relays in the non-scoring meet, which included Mount Holyoke and Westfield State. Junior
Elly Stone (West borough, Mass./Westborough) made a qualifying score for nationals as the diver won the 1-meter competition with her score of 274.95. The 800 free relay team of
Eliza Cummings,
Aidan Coffin Ness,
Desi Stoyanova, and
Abby Onos finished first in 8:35.79.
Abigail Hanna (Averill Park, N.Y.) had a great start to her collegiate career as the first year turned in a third place finish on the 1-meter (200.35) and second place finish on the 3-meter (219.60).
