CLERMONT, Fla. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in Clermont, Florida, falling just short to UMass Dartmouth, 9-8, before suffering an 8-0 defeat to University of Wisconsin River Falls.
SMITH 7 UMASS DARTMOUTH 8
- The Corsairs used three singles to jump out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
- The Pioneers returned the favor and evened the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third. Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool), Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional), and Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) each recorded RBI doubles while Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central)Â recorded a sac fly.
- UMass Dartmouth's bats exploded for four more runs in the fourth to give them an 8-4 lead.
- Smith continued to fight as Feeney's single down the line scored Kraus.
- A single by Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) brought home Konas to help the Pioneers get to within two, 8-6.
- Rachael Newhall smacked her first career homer in the fifth to make it 8-7, but that's as close as it would get as the Corsairs went on for the victory.
SMITH 0 WISCONSIN RIVER FALLS 8
- Lexi Dupree opened the scoring for the Falcons as she smacked a home run to left field in the second.Â
- Wisconsin River Falls extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Maddie Studnicka ripped a 2 RBI double to center field. Aiyana Ledwein and Molly Kaspar each doubled to bring home runs in the fourth.
- Studnicka's two run homer in the fifth made it 7-0 and the Falcons rounded out the scoring in the same inning for the 8-0 final.
- For the Pioneers, Jane Casey-Fleener collected her first career hit, while Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional)Â added a double.Â
- Junior pitcher Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.

The Pioneers return to action Monday at 11:00 a.m. against Stockton followed by a 3:00 p.m. matchup with the Endicott.
