Softball Falls to Babson in NEWMAC Doubleheader

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of games to Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Wednesday afternoon. Babson claimed game one, 14-4, and completed the sweep with a 9-0 decision in six innings. 

Babson improves to 20-10 on the season and 10-4 in league action, while the Pioneers drop to 5-22, 2-12.

Senior Lindsey Lord (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown), sophomore Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii), and first-year Rachael Newhall each finished with two hits for Smith, while sophomore Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) drove in two runs. Senior pitcher Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) gave up five runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work. 

Senior Ali Reilly improved to 12-2 on the year with a complete game five strikeout effort, while also adding three RBI. Senior Erica Pavlo finished with two hits and four RBI .

Trailing 8-0, the Pioneers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the game. Sophomore Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central)' sac fly moved all runners up, scoring first-year Jane Casey-Fleener. Townsend's two RBI double brought home Newhall and Wagner before senior Lindsey Lord (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown)'s single allowed Townsend to cross home plate.

Konas went 2-for-3 while Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii), Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), Lindsey Lord (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown), and Jocelyn Esquer each recorded hits for the Pioneers. Turner took the loss, allowing nine runs on 16 hits with two strikeouts. 

Senior Samantha Smith and junior Annie Quine each hit 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Beavers. Sophomore pitcher Katie Gademsky earned the complete game shutout, allowing six hits and one strikeout.

Sophomore Jacqueline Paul led off the second inning with a home run to left field and Babson added another three runs in the bottom of the third inning. A three-run sixth inning extended the visitor's lead to 9-0 which would stand as the final.

Smith returns to action Friday, April 20 when the Pioneers host MIT at 3:00 p.m.
