WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Smith College softball team topped Westfield State, 9-8, in game two of a non-conference doubleheader at Alumni Field Monday afternoon. The Owls earned a 4-2 victory in game one. The Pioneers are now 6-27 on the year, while Westfield State owns an 11-17 record on the season.
GAME 1: SMITH 2 WESTFIELD STATE 4
With both teams tied 1-1 in the first inning of the opening game, Owls' junior Karly Mastello hit an RBI single to take the 2-1 lead. Senior Angelica Banning hit a two-run single to extend Westfield's lead to 4-1.
Smith College's
Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) drove in a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2.
Freshman Emily Arredondo got the win for the Owls going seven innings and allowing two runs on 11 hits. Senior
Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) took the pitching loss in game one going six innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits.
GAME 2: SMITH 9 WESTFIELD 8
The Pioneers turned things around in game two, scoring six runs in a decisive first inning. Juniors
Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) and
Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) each drove in runs, while senior
Lindsey Lord (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) singled and advanced to home on errors by the Owl defense.
Westfield State responded with four runs of their own in the second and third innings to drive in freshman Jackie Reynolds, junior Kayla Soucie, senior Maddy Atkocaitis, and junior Caitlin Hughes to make it 6-4.
A ground-out to second base allowed Smith College's
Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) to score. Pioggia followed with a two-RBI single that gave the Pioneers a 9-4 lead in the fourth inning.
Westfield State tacked on four more runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on an RBI triple from Atkocaitis, a sacrifice fly from Hughes, a groundout to short stop, and an RBI single from Banning making it 9-8, but the Owls weren't able to find another scoring opportunity.
Flohr earned the win, going four innings and was relieved by Turner who pitched the last three.
Emily Woodworth was in the circle for the Owls in game two, going five innings and allowing nine runs on 10 hits.
