Smith Track and Field Shines at Mary Grinaker Invitational

Northampton, MA — Smith College Track and Field delivered strong performances across multiple events at the Mary Grinaker Invitational held on December 2, 2024, at the Smith Indoor Track and Tennis facility. Competing against regional rivals including Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire College, the Pioneers showcased their depth and potential as they build momentum for the indoor season.

Highlights:

  • 60 Meters: Smith's sprinters performed well in the finals, with several athletes achieving personal bests. Junior Daniela Pilier (Higuey, DR/Escuela Liceo Juan XXIII de la Salle) placed in the top 10, demonstrating the team's growing strength in short sprints.

  • Mile Run: Smith's Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) led the way for the middle-distance group, finishing ifirst with a time that improved upon her previous season's best by several seconds. Shams Ferver (Barre, VT/U-32) finished in 2nd in this race as well. 

  • Pole Vault: First Year Cadence Sorenson represented Smith well with a leap of 2.75 meters, placing her among at the top of the competitors in the event. 

  • 4x400 Relay: Smith's relay team capped the meet with an exciting performance, finishing in the top three. The quartet's smooth baton exchanges and strong anchor leg highlighted their teamwork and preparation.

Smith will continue their indoor track season with preparations for upcoming regional meets. The team's success at the Mary Grinaker Invitational demonstrates their readiness for competitive challenges in the weeks ahead. The next race will happen after the New Year at the Reggie Poyau Invitational whoch takes place at Brandeis University.
