Pioneers Excel with Event Wins, PRs, and Championship Qualifiers

Norton, MA -  Smith College Track & Field showcased another stellar performance at a nine-team meet, finishing with two event wins, nine personal records (PRs), five New England Division III  Championship qualifiers, and 23 top-ten finishes.

Event Highlights and Top-Ten Results

800m: Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) continued her breakout season, winning the 800m in a huge PR of 2:23.22 and securing her spot at the New England Division 3 Championships. She led two teammates to qualifying times: Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) placed third with a PR of 2:24.05, and Shams Ferver (Barre, VT/U-32) finished fourth in 2:25.72. Additional top-ten finishes came from Amelia Dion (Burlington, VT), who was sixth in 2:28.01, and Elaine McCarty (), who placed eighth in 2:38.15.

Mile: Serena Britner (Hampton, CT/St. Bernard) led from start-to-tape to dominate the mile with a New England Division III Championship qualifying time of 5:18.29. Teammate Hillary Connor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) followed in sixth place, setting a PR of 5:25.50.

60m Hurdles: Elowyn Gottsacker (Portland, OR/Roosevelt) took second in the 60m hurdles, setting a PR of 9.88. Ada Fisher () followed in fourth with a time of 10.06, and Elaine McCarty () placed tenth in 11.27.

5000m: Amie Gronert (Milwaukee, WI/Shorewood) finished second in the 5000m with a PR of 19:01.88. Behind her, Juanita Gutierrez (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) placed sixth in 20:12.27, and Jonna Rosenthal (Portland, ME/Deering) came in eighth with a time of 20:28.42.

Pole Vault: Jill da Costa Pinto and Cady Sorensen tied for third place, both clearing 3.10m.

400m: Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) placed fourth in the 400m, clocking 1:02.60. Elowyn Gottsacker (Portland, OR/Roosevelt) followed in eighth with a time of 1:05.14, and Gwyn Howes secured a PR of 1:07.93 to finish tenth.

Long Jump & High Jump: Elaine McCarty () finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 4.64m, while Juliet May () jumped 3.97m. May also placed ninth in the high jump with a 1.26m clearance.

60m & 200m: In the 60m, Daniela Pilier (Higuey, DR/Escuela Liceo Juan XXIII de la Salle) placed eighth with a time of 8.31. She then secured seventh in the 200m with a PR of 27.64, while Tiff Hooker rounded out the top ten in 28.60.

Weight Throw: Melanie Wells () threw a PR of 8.31m in the weight throw.

The Pioneers once again demonstrated their depth and competitive edge, with athletes excelling across a variety of events in preparation for the next meet. With continued momentum, Smith Track & Field looks forward to further success this season as they travel to Boston University next weekend for the Terrier Invitational.
