WORCESTER -
Katherine Welsh (St. Paul, MN/Saint Paul Academy) posted a pair of first place finishes and
Susannah Winfield (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) won the 200 breast as the Smith College swimming & diving team split a multi-team meet inside the WPI Sports and Recreation Center Pool on Friday evening.
The Bears (5-2) defeated Brandeis University 222-68 and topped WPI 160-.5-132.5 while falling to Babson 147-144 and Coast Guard, 192.5-106.5.
"Last year at this meet we went 1-3. To be 3 points away from going 3-1 shows the improvement this team has made. The scores are just a small reflection of the work this team is putting in daily. We still have plenty of room to improve and our best training is ahead of us. This team is developing more grit each week and I'm excited to see what the next few weeks bring out of them." Head Coach Caleb Potvin

"I was extremely nervous heading into the meet," said
Susannah Winfield (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora). "It was my first big college meet, and I was worried about how well I could swim after having a tough week. But the energy that my teammates brought hyped me up and helped turn my nerves into confidence. By the time I got to my race the amazing support that I had from the team around me led me to give it my absolute all. At each turn the cheers from my teammates gave me new strength to push even harder, and I ended up with a first place finish in my 200 breast. Getting a win in one of my first college meets is such and incredible feeling, and I'm so grateful to my teammates for giving me the strength to push through a long intimidating meet, and I'm so proud of how much strength everyone showed today!"
