Smith Track & Field Excels at Tufts and Harvard Meets

Cambridge, MA - Smith College Track & Field athletes continued their strong indoor season with standout performances at the Tufts Cupid Challenge on Friday and the Harvard Crimson Open on Saturday. From multi-event success to personal bests across various disciplines, the Pioneers showed impressive growth and determination throughout the weekend as they continue to prep for the New England Division III Championships. 

Tufts Cupid Challenge Highlights

  • Sophomore Elaine McCarty () made her collegiate pentathlon debut, putting together a well-rounded performance that showcased her versatility.
  • She delivered a season-best 1.44m high jump and set personal records in both the shot put (8.24m) and the long jump (4.83m).
  • McCarty finished with 2,428 total points, narrowly missing a top-ten finish by placing 11th overall.
  • Her performance sets a strong foundation for future multi-event competitions as she continues to develop her skills.

Harvard Crimson Open Highlights

  • First-year Elowyn Gottsacker (Portland, OR/Roosevelt) had a breakout meet, earning personal bests in both the 60m hurdles (9.80) and the 200m (27.64). Her continued progress in the sprints and hurdles is a testament to her dedication and training.
  • In the distance events, Juanita Gutierrez (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) delivered a standout performance in the 3000m, running a personal best of 11:13.94 to secure 9th place. Her steady improvement marks a significant step forward in her season.
  • Sprinter Daniela Pilier (Higuey, DR/Escuela Liceo Juan XXIII de la Salle) continued to impress, running a season-best 8.17 in the 60m dash. Her consistency and progress make her a key contributor to Smith's sprint squad.
  • In the pole vault, Cady Sorensen had a fantastic day, finishing 3rd with a PR-tying 3.25m jump. Right behind her, Jill da Costa Pinto secured 4th place with a jump of 2.95m, highlighting Smith's strength in the event.

Up Next: 

Smith travels back to Medford next weekend as they will participate in the Tufts Invitational on Saturday before returning home the following weekend for the Peter De Villers Cup.
