Track & Field Finishes Runner-Up at Wellesley; McCarty, Ferver, da Costa Pinto Lead with Individual Wins

WELLESLEY, MA. – The Smith College track and field team turned in a strong showing on the road Saturday, finishing second overall at a competitive meet hosted by Wellesley College. The Pioneers showcased their depth across sprints, distance, hurdles, and field events, highlighted by multiple personal records and several event victories.

Elaine McCarty () led the charge in the field, capturing the high jump title with a personal-best 1.50m and scoring again in the 100-meter hurdles. Juliet May () added points in the long jump with a PR of 4.61m, while Mollie Doyle () notched a scoring throw of 8.66m in the shot put and set new PRs in both the hammer and javelin.

Annabel English () also had a breakout day, scoring in the hammer with a massive PR of 32.53m and adding another PR in the discus. Ada Fisher () chipped in with a scoring throw in the javelin.

On the track, Elowyn Gottsacker (Portland, OR/Roosevelt) continued her rise, earning points and posting PRs in both the 100m and 400m hurdles. In the pole vault, Jill da Costa Pinto cleared the bar for the win, while teammate Casey Sorenson followed in second to complete a dominant Smith 1–2 finish.

Middle and long-distance events were a major strength for the Pioneers. Lyda Martin (San Antonio, TX/Lee) and Serena Britner (Hampton, CT/St. Bernard) went 1–2 in the 1500m, each hitting New England Division III Championship qualifying times. Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) took the 400m crown, and Daniela Pilier (Higuey, DR/Escuela Liceo Juan XXIII de la Salle) clocked a new personal best of 12.83 to score in the 100m before returning to pick up more points in the 200m with Niveen Bugueiro ().

Shams Ferver (Barre, VT/U-32) raced to a win in the 800m with a PR of 2:17.57, while Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) joined her in the scoring with a PR of 2:22.53 for fourth place. Pria Parker (Hingham, MA/Hingham) claimed top honors in the 3000m, and Hilary Connor secured third to add to Smith's distance points.

Capping the day, the 4x400m relay team of Baker, Ferver, Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), and Parker combined for a second-place finish to help Smith secure its runner-up spot in the team standings.

Up Next

Smith returns to action next weekend as they will partake in the NEWMAC Championships, taking place at Mount Holyoke. Races start on Friday.
