Bears Shine at John Thomas Terrier Classic

January 31, 2026

BOSTON, Mass. – The Smith College track and field team continued its indoor campaign with standout performances at the prestigious John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University. Competing on one of the fastest tracks in the country, the Bears capitalized on the elite atmosphere to secure multiple personal records across the distance and sprint events.

Track Highlights

The middle-distance and sprint groups led the charge for the Bears, highlighted by a heat-winning performance in the 400m.

  • Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) delivered a career-best performance in the 400m, winning her heat with a time of 59.08. The mark represents a new personal record for Baker and sees her break the significant sub-60 second barrier.

  • In the 800m, both Amelia Dion and Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) notched personal bests. The duo navigated the crowded fields to lower their previous career marks, continuing their upward trajectory this season.

  • Lyda Martin (San Antonio, TX/Lee) added to the Bears' PR tally in the mile. Martin clocked a new personal best, showing strong form as the team moves into the heart of the indoor schedule.

Up Next

The Bears will look to carry this momentum into the Mary Grinaker Invitational on Saturday January 31st.
