CAMBRIDGE & MEDFORD, Mass. – The Smith College track and field team split its squad on Friday, competing at the Crimson Open hosted by Harvard University and the Cupid Classic hosted by Tufts University. The Bears delivered a series of top-10 finishes and competitive marks across both venues.
Crimson Open Highlights
At Harvard, the middle-distance unit produced standout results in the 1000-meter run. Junior Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) led the way, crossing the line in 3:03.98 to secure a 9th-place finish. First-year Avery Grace Maiese (Waterford, CT/Waterford High School) followed closely, finishing 11th with a time of 3:05.66.
In the distance events, junior Lucy Kreipke (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) raced to a top-10 finish in the 3000-meter run, clocking in at 10:35.04 to take 9th place. The Bears demonstrated their depth in the event with senior Hillary Connor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) (10:54.23), first-year Indigo Olsen (Leadville, Colorado/Lake County High School) (11:30.73), and sophomore Elise Kennedy (Middletown, CT/Middletown) (11:38.50) all competing for the Blue and Gold. Sophomore Amie Gronert (Milwaukee, WI/Shorewood) represented Smith in the 5000-meter run, earning a 6th-place finish with a time of 19:17.77.
On the sprint side, senior Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing 15th overall with a time of 1:00.17. In the 800-meter run, first-year Indie Lamb (Barrington, RI/Barrington High School) led the Bears with a 15th-place finish in 2:24.91. She was joined by junior Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) (2:25.58) and first-year Abigail Lei (2:30.37)
In the field, the pole vault squad saw three athletes clear the bar in successful outings. In the Invite section, senior Kerry Seekamp (Destin, FL/Fort Walton Beach) cleared 3.38m to place 10th. In the Open section, senior Jillian da Costa Pinto (West Hartford, CT/Conard) finished 8th with a height of 3.30m, while Cadence Sorensen took 9th after clearing 3.15m. Junior Mollie Doyle () competed in the weight throw, recording a mark of 9.84m.
Tufts Cupid Classic Highlights
Competing in the pentathlon at Tufts, Elaine McCarty () put together a strong series of performances for the Bears. Her day was highlighted by a top-5 finish in the long jump, where she leaped 4.85m (15-11.00) to take 5th place in the event.
On the track, McCarty finished 7th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.18 seconds and placed 11th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:45.60. She rounded out her five-event day with an 8th-place finish in the high jump (1.37m / 4-06.00) and a 9th-place effort in the shot put (9.02m / 29-07.25).
