WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Smith College track and field team posted a second-place finish at the Wellesley-Mt. Holyoke-Smith Tri-Meet on Saturday at Wellesley College, highlighted by seven individual event victories and a wave of personal and season-best performances across the field.
Event Winners
Lena Baker (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit North) delivered the day's standout performance, sweeping the 200m and 400m to claim two individual titles. Baker topped the 200m field in 27.15 seconds before returning to win the 400m in 1:00.35. Daniela Pilier (Higuey, DR/Escuela Liceo Juan XXIII de la Salle) opened the day with a first-place finish in the 100m, clocking a wind-aided 12.72. Elowyn Gottsacker (Portland, OR/Roosevelt) controlled the 100m Hurdles from start to finish, winning in 15.67. In the distance events, Sofia Jurusz (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Middle Township) took the 800m in 2:20.50, while Lyda Martin (San Antonio, TX/Lee) powered to the top of the 3000m standings with a winning time of 10:24.67.
In the field, Kerry Seekamp (Destin, FL/Fort Walton Beach) claimed the pole vault title at 3.30m (10-10), and Caroline Brennick (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) recorded a personal best in the javelin, launching a winning throw of 29.54m (96-11).
Depth Across the Lineup
The Bears complemented their event winners with strong performances throughout the roster. Catherine Collins (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) set a personal best in the 800m, finishing second in 2:21.60, and Avery Grace Maiese (Waterford, CT/Waterford High School) also notched a personal best in the 1500m, placing second in 4:55.69. Mollie Doyle () had a productive day in the throws, recording a personal best in the shot put (9.86m/32-04.25) and a third-place mark of 36.09m (118-05) in the hammer. Pilier added a season best in the 200m (27.34), placing third, while Gwyneth Howes () also posted a season best in the event (28.74).
In the relays, the 4x100m team of Niveen Bugueiro (), Baker, Howes and Pilier finished second in 53.39, and the 4x400m squad of Maiese, Jurusz, Collins and Martin crossed the line second in 4:13.86.
