Box Score 2 WELLESLEY, Mass.--Smith College lost both of their matches on Day Two of the Seven Sisters Championship, falling to Bryn Mawr in the opener 3-1 (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 18-25) and host Wellesley in the second game of the day 3-0 (8-25, 14-25, 24-15).
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Smith's record now stands at 7-10 overall. As noted, Drummond and Bell were Smith's All-Tournament representatives. Drummond ranked third in the tournament with 3.79 kills per set, while Blair placed fifth overall averaging 3.36 kills.
Wellesley College took home the Championship at the 2011 Seven Sisters Volleyball Tournament, capping the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Vassar. Entering the weekend's final match, both the Blue and the Brewers each sported 3-0 records, turning Sunday's final tilt into the tournament-deciding match.
Bryn Mawr finished the weekend 2-2 to take home third place. After starting the tournament 0-2, the Owls picked up wins over Smith and Mount Holyoke to grab third. Smith took fourth place with a 1-3 record, while Mount Holyoke finished fifth, going 0-4.
In a tightly contested four-set match, Bryn Mawr downed Smith, 3-1, on Sunday in the third round of the Seven Sisters' Championship.
Set one proved to be a see-saw affair until a late charge from Smith gave the Pioneers a 21-20. But Bryn Mawr captured five of the next seven points for a 25- 23 win. The Owls carried the momentum into game two, grabbing a 7-5 lead. The Pioneers fought back for a 14-9 advantage, but Bryn Mawr's Katie Merrill led an Owls come-back that gave them another 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Game three witnessed several momentum swings, until Bryn Mawr inched out to a 22-17 lead. Smith's
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) answered with six points from the service line, including two kills from
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly), to give the Pioneers a 23-22 edge. A sideout later, Smith sealed the set 25-23.
Bryn Mawr rebounded in set four, as the Owls quickly built a 10-3 lead. Smith fought back to tie the game at 12-12, but a six-point run from the Owls put the set out of reach as they coasted to a 25-18 win.
Bryn Mawr's Katie Merrill led all players with 24 kills, while also picking up 11 digs and six blocks. Mikecia Witherspoon added nine kills, while Hannah Rosebrock chipped in eith eight kills and a team-high 17 digs. Danielle Preziuso notched 33 assists to complete the stat sheet.
For Smith,
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) racked up 18 kills, while
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) picked up 16.
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) tallied 25 assists, while
Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) picked up 19. Also for the Pioneers,
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) was the digs leader with 31.
Wellesley opened its day two of the Seven Sisters' tournament with a 3-0 win over conference rival Smith College.
The Blue scored early and often in the first set, grabbing a 10-3 lead in route to a 25-8 win. Set two saw more of the same, as Wellesley once again powered their way to an early 13-5 advantage. Smith surged midway through the set, trimming the lead to 17-11, but Wellesley coasted to a 25-14 win.
The squads traded points early in game three, but with the score knotted at 7-6, Wellesley took nine of the next eleven points to break away for good, eventually sealing the sweep with a 25-14 victory.
Smith's attack was led by
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) who tallied five kills, while
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) picked up eight assists. Kristi Hammon tallied 11 digs and added two aces to round out the stat leaders.
Wellesley was led by Kellyn O'Brady who hit at a .778 clip with seven kills and zero errors. Hilary Ayers dished out 18 assists in the match, while Vivian Hu added 14 digs.
