Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--Albright College pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the top of the sixth inning to deal Smith College a tough 3-2 defeat in the Pioneers' second game of the day on Monday morning. Smith had fallen to St. Lawrence University 8-0 earlier in the day.
Smith (0-4) had fallen behind to the Lions (4-4) when Brandy Lagomarsino reached on an error to lead off the game and scored on an RBI single from Jaime Wessecker. The Pioneers countered in the bottom half of the inning when Kathryn Durkin reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a passed ball. A single up the middle from
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) moved her to third, and after Clark stole second base, Kaitlyn O'Brien smacked a double to left field to score both runners and give Smith a 2-1 lead.
Albright tied the game in the third on an RBI groundout from Kiersten Gilfoy, but beyond that, Smith held firm, denying the Lions chances in the fourth and fifth innings. Jackie Bohanon opened the fourth with a walk, and was bunted over to second, but Smith starter
Abagael Shrader (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) killed the rally with a strikeout of Alex Tragno and inducing a groundout to first from Hillary Rodriguez.
The Lions had a runner on third twice in the fifth, but could not take the lead. Marguerite DeLucas doubled to start the inning, but was cut down by third baseman
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) tying to score. Wessecker then left Nikki Schwenk stranded at third by popping out to
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) at shortstop.
Smith also had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning.
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled to left, and moved to third on two fielder's choices, but O'Brien struck out to end the inning. In the top half of the sixth, Albright took the lead for good, with Bohanon leading off with a walk, and Tragno driving her home with a one out single up the middle.
Goodman finished with three hits for Smith. Shrader went the first four innings, giving up two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) took the loss, striking out three in three innings.
In the day's opener against St. Lawrence, Smith managed just two hits in an 8-0, five inning defeat. The Saints scored three runs in the first and four in the second to break the game open early. Kiers went the distance, striking out five and walking seven, but just four of the eight runs allowed were earned.
Smith will battle UMass-Dartmouth at 5 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a 7 p.m. matchup with St. Joseph's of Brooklyn (N.Y.)
