Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) cracked a three run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Smith College softball team to their first win of the season, a 4-3 triumph over UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday evening.
Goodman's two out blast was one of seven Smith hits during the game, and none was more crucial. Smith had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Kaitlyn O'Brien singled and moved to second on
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark)'s sacrifice bunt.
Salma Mehter (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) was hit by a pitch and
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) walked to load the bases, and
Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s groundout to shortstop was enough to drive home O'Brien.
In the bottom of the fourth, consecutive hits, followed by an RBI groundout by Kaitlin Hogan and a single from Emily Pontes drove home a pair of runs that gave UMass-Dartmouth (0-4) a 2-1 lead, and the Corsairs tacked on another run when Brittany Eldrige drove home Hannah Rounds with a double in the bottom of the fifth.
Smith started the comeback in the next half inning. With one out, Kiers reached base when she was hit by a pitch, and Mehter singled her over to second. A sacrifice from Tocci moved both runners over, and Goodman followed up with a three run blast that gave Smith the lead for good.
Abagael Shrader (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) put the clamps on UMass-Dartmouth's final rally attempt to earn the save - with one out, Elizabeth Mulready and Rounds drew consecutive rounds, and a Smith error loaded the bases. Mulready was cutdown trying to take home on the play, and Hogan grounded out to Shrader to end the game.
Goodman, Mehter, and O'Brien each collected two hits for Smith. Kiers went six innings in the circle, striking out four to earn the win.
In the day's second game, Smith held a 1-0 lead on St. Joseph's of Brooklyn until the fifth inning before falling 2-1 to the Lady Bears. Kathryn Durkin reached on an error in the third inning, and
Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) singled up the middle to bring her home. Beaton's second hit of the day had a chance to double the lead in the top of the fifth, but pinch runner Katina Katides was stranded at third.
St. Joe's tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth, taking advantage of four walks issued by the Pioneers' staff, and an error and three Lady Bear hits gave St. Joe's the lead for good.
In addition to Beaton's two singles, Tocci also went 2-for-3 for Smith (1-5). Shrader went the first two and one-third innings, taking the loss despite not giving up a hit. Kiers went the final 3.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs.
Smith will take the day off tomorrow, and return to the diamond with a pair of games against Franklin & Marshall (5 p.m.) and Curry College (7 p.m.) on March 17.
