Softball Drops Two At Gene Cusic Classic

March 17, 2011

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--The Smith College softball team managed just four hits in two games in falling to Frankling & Marshall College 9-1 and Curry College 11-1 on Thursday evening.  The losses drop Smith's record to 1-7 on the young season.

In the opener against F&M, Smith started the scoring in the top of the first as Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) walked, moved to second on an error, and after Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) singled her over to third,  scored on Kaitlyn O'Brien's groundout to shortstop.  The Diplomats took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, getting a two-run single from Samantha Denoville.  F&M added a single run in the second and five in the third to break open the contest.

Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) and Clark had Smith's two hits.  Abagael Shrader (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) and Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) split time in the circle, with Shrader going 2.2 innings and Kiers going 2.0 innings, and each recording one strikeout.

In the second game against Curry, Smith again scored first, but the Colonels scored nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach.  Goodman walked and scored on a fielder's choice from Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) for Smith's only run.

Curry scored nine runs by taking advantage of two Smith errors and sending 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, rapping out seven hits in the frame.

Clark smacked a double for one of Smith's three  hits in the game; Tocci and Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) had the others.  Shrader went four innings for Smith, striking out two.

Smith will wrap up their trip to Florida with games against Worcester State and Delaware Valley at 9 am and 11 am on Friday, March 18.
