Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--Delaware Valley College scored twice in the bottom of the seven inning to complete a come from behind 5-4 win over Smith College on the Pioneers' trip to the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday. In the Pioneers' first game, Smith fell to Worcester State University by an 11-2 count.
Smith (1-9) knocked out 10 hits, their most in a game so far this season, and five of them came in the opening first inning, where they scored three runs.
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) led off with a single, followed by another hit from Kathryn Durkin.
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais)'s fielder's choice cut down Goodman, but Kaitlyn O'Brien's single loaded the bases for
Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable), who rapped a 2-run double to put the Pioneers in front.
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) smashed a single that scored Clark for a 3-0 Smith lead.
The Pioneers made it 4-0 in the top of the second, when
Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) doubled, took third on a passed ball, and scored on Durkin's second hit of the ballgame. The Aggies pulled a run back in the bottom of the inning on Gabrielle Murphy's RBI single, and pulled within a run in the fourth inning. Erin Fox hit a 2-out single and Greer McComas hit a two run homer to make it a 4-3 game.
Delaware Valley won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Allison Tomasino, Kaci Gummoe, and Jess Bensinger all reached to open the inning, and Sarah Lazar's pinch hit single tied the game at four. After Krystle Mazza grounded out to second, Loran Mihalik won the game with a single that scored Gummoe.
Eight different players for Smith had a hit, including two each for
Salma Mehter (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and Kathryn Durkin.
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) went the distance for Smith, striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings.
In the day's earlier game, Smith fell to Worcester State College 11-2. Statistics were not available at press time. The Pioneers return to New England with a date with Westfield State College on March 22 at 4 pm first on tap.
