Kiers Fires One Hitter As Smith Falls To Westfield State

April 11, 2011

WESTFIELD, Mass. – First year Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) spun a one-hitter, but Smith fell 4-2 in a non-conference soft game to Westfield State University on Monday afternoon. Westfield took advantage of eight walks and three errors in handing Smith its 25th setback in 26 starts.

Smith scored single runs in the first and second innings. In the first frame, Chelsie Biluck (Delran, N.J./Delran) was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable)'s double to the left-center field gap.

The Owls scored three runs in the home half of the first to take a 3-1 lead. After her leadoff hit, Carroll scored from first on a sacrifice hit by Lisa Policelli and by a two-base throwing error on the play. Policelli reached third on the miscue and scored on an illegal pitch.

Three consecutive walks loaded the bases and Brittany Dussault delivered a sacrifice fly.

Smith scratched for its second-inning run to make it 3-2. Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) led off with a single down the right field line; she advanced to second on one of Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s two sacrifice hits and scampered to third on a wild pitch. Purington scored on an RBI groundout by Kathryn Durkin.

The Owls scored an unearned run in the fourth inning. Cassy Jouannet led off with a walk and pinch runner Molly Dunbar stole second base. Dunbar advanced to third on a Carroll groundout and scored on a throwing error across the diamond by the first baseman.

Smith, which stranded eight base runners, threatened in the fifth when Fluet walked the first two batters. But she rolled a 5-3 double play to get out of the jam.

Fluet finished with three strikeouts and five walks. Losing pitcher Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) struck out two in addition to allowing her one hit and eight walks.

Purington was 2 for 3 for Smith and Beaton and Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) both doubled.

Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13, taking on Amherst College in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m.
