NORTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team fell in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader to Wheaton College, 18-0 and 10-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers fall to 1-17 and 0-6 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton improves to 13-10 with a 4-4 NEWMAC record.
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and
Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) each had two hits for Smith in the second game. Down 4-0 in the fourth inning, Smith gota run in the top of the fourth when Beaton singled up the middle and scored on
Salma Mehter (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt)'s single to left field.
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) added a second run in the top of the fourth when she reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Beaton's single to center.
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) took the loss for Smith, striking out three and walking five in 4.2 innings of work.
The Lyons scored 13 runs in the first inning of the opener, limiting Smith to one hit;
Abagael Shrader (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana)'s single down the left field line in the fourth inning.
Smith will be back in action tomorrow, hosting a doubleheader with No. 11 Coast Guard coming to town.
