NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team held their own against No. 11 Coast Guard on Sunday, falling in a doubleheader 5-0 and 17-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Sunday. The games were rescheduled from Friday after a snowstorm covered Smith's field.
In the first game, Smith got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. Amanda Frederick walked with two out, and a double by Holli Bastinck moved her over to third. Another walk to Megan Cook loaded the bases, but Smith starter got out of trouble by getting Kaitlin Ward to line out to short.
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) had Smith's lone hit of the game when she doubled with one out in the bottom of the first, but was stranded on second when Kaitlyn O'Brien popped out to short and
Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) struck out swinging.
The Bears scored all the runs they would need in the top of the second, with Devin Fellman driving in two runs with a single up the middle that scored Stacia Sarwinski and Catherine Walker.
Smith's best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh.
Chelsie Biluck (Delran, N.J./Delran) reached on a dropped fly ball to open the frame, and Kathryn Durkin bunted pinch runner
Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) over to second. After
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) struck out,
Salma Mehter (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) was hit by a pitch, but
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) grounded out to the pitcher to end the contest.
Kiers went the distance for Smith, striking two while spinning a six hitter. Hayley Feindel struck out seven for Coast Guard.
In the nightcap, the Bears scored 10 runs over the first two innings in a 17-1 victory. Smith got their only run in the bottom of the fifth, as Katina Katides singled, moved the third on
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais)'s double, and scored on
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon)'s base hit. Tocci led Smith with a 2-for-2 effort. Kiers and
Abagael Shrader (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) spent time in the circle for Smith, combining for three strikeouts. Bastinck had four RBI for Coast Guard.
Smith will be back at it tomorrow, taking on Westfield State in a 4:00 pm road contest.
