Box Score NORTON, Mass.--
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) both had career outings as the Smith College volleyball team snapped a two game losing skid and broke into the win column in NEWMAC play with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 15-9) win over Wheaton College on Tuesday evening.
The win improves Smith's record to 4-2 and 1-2 in NEWMAC play. The Lyons fall to 2-10 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC. The four wins are one more than Smith had in all of 2010, when they went 3-21.
And this win was due in large part to the play of Drummond and Bezubka. Drummond posted 26 kills, besting her previous career high by five, and had 19 digs, which were also a career best. She also hit .345 for the match and had five service aces. A large portion of those kills were due to the set up play of Bezubka, who had 31 assists - her previous career high was 17 - in the back-and-forth contest.
Becca Gordon (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) notched 11 kills (.474 hitting pct.) and three blocks (one solo) in her second game back from injury for Smith, while
Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) chipped in 13 assists.
Wheaton captured game one, 25-22, behind five kills from sophomore Rachel Vergara and three each from Tebbetts and junior co-captain Christina Cannon. Drummond, along with juniors
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) and
Becca Gordon (West Hartford, Conn./Hall), each posted three kills for the Pioneers.
Smith answered by winning game two, 25-18, and game three, 26-24, to grab a 2-1 edge in the match. Drummond combined to post 14 kills in the two wins while Tebbetts tallied nine for the Lyons. Vergara totaled 14 digs in the two games.
Led by Tebbett's eight kills, Wheaton rallied back to win game four, 25-22, and force a fifth and decisive set. Sophomore Marguerite Copeland chipped in with four kills for the Lyons while Drummond had four for Smith. Gordon and sophomore
Sibyl Brown (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) had three kills apiece for the Pioneers.
In the fifth set, Smith posted a .474 hitting pct. and scored a 15-9 win to take the match. The Pioneers were again led by Drummond, who recorded a kill on each of her five attack attempts to finish with a .345 hitting pct. for the match. Vergara had three kills to pace Wheaton.
Junior Olanna Nissim handed out a career-high 51 assists for the Lyons while Vergara was credited with a career-high 26 digs. Senior co-captain Emily Davisson picked up 16 digs for Wheaton while Cannon finished with nine kills and 16 digs. The Lyons finished the match with 13 receiving errors, compared to seven for the visitors.
Smith will take a break from NEWMAC play, taking part in the MIT Invitational this weekend. The Pioneers have been put in a group with Endicott and Tufts. Group play begins on Friday, September 23, with Smith facing Endicott at 6 p.m. and Tufts at 8 p.m. The medal round begins on Saturday.
