Softball Drops Two To Open Florida Trip

March 18, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--The Smith College softball team lost their two opening contests on their Spring Break trip, with an 11-3 defeat to UMass-Dartmouth and a 12-2, five inning loss to Worcester State University on Sunday afternoon.

In the opener against the Corsairs, Smith (0-2) fell behind 2-0 after the first inning on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.  UMD got a single run in the third and two more in the fourth before Smith got on the board.

Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) got the first run of the season for Smith when she tripled with one out in the fifth inning, then scored on Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy)'s steal attempt.  Smith pulled in two more runs in the next frame when Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) and Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) hit back to back doubles, and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) plated Goodman with a single that cut the lead to 5-3.

The Corsairs batted around in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to put the game out of reach.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) pitched the first four innings and allowed two earned runs, striking out three.  Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) took the loss for Smith, notching two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.

Against Worcester State, Smith opened the scoring, then ceded a six run second inning as the Lancers jumped on top early.  Buse's leadoff single started the game for Smith, then moved to second on Goodman's walk.  Clark moved her to third on a fielder's choice and she scored on an error.  The Lancers sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, scoring six times before recording an out.  Smith added another run in the third when Goodman singled and scored on Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable)'s single.

Kiers tossed five innings in the second game, striking out two and walking five.

Smith will be back on the diamond tomorrow, playing Olivet College (Mich.) at 9 a.m. and St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 1 p.m.
