Softball Splits With Olivet, St. Olaf

March 19, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--Smith College broke into the win column for the first time this season, defeating Olivet College (Mich.) 6-0 in their opening game on Tuesday, and falling to St. Olaf College 10-0 on Monday afternoon.

Smith (1-3) scored a single run in the second inning against the Comets when Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) drew a two out walk and moved to second on Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy)'s single to right field.  Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) followed up with a single to center to plate Purington for the only run Smith would need.

The Pioneers tacked on four more in the fourth.  Megan Januszewski (Ascutney, Vt./Windsor) walked and moved to third on an error that put Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) on base.  A wild pitch brought home Januszewski, and back-to-back singles from Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) brought home two more runs for a 4-0 lead.  Clark scored on another Olivet error to give Smith a 5-0 advantage, and Goodman put the icing on the cake when she cracked a solo homerun center field in the sixth.

Goodman and Richardson each had two hits for Smith, who finised with seven hits and took advantage of four Olivet errors.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) twirled a two-hitter, notching five strikeouts in a complete game win.  After a wild first inning, Kiers allowed just one hit in the final six innings.

In the second game, the Oles scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to put the game away.  A grand slam highlighted the third inning for St. Olaf, who sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth.  Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) notched the only hit for Smith with a third inning single.

Kiers pitched the first three innings, striking out two and allowing three earned runs.  Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) went the final two in the circle, allowing five earned runs with one strikeout.

Smith will be off tomorrow, before resuming play against the College of Wooster and the University of New England on Thursday.
