Softball Edged By Wooster, University of New England

March 21, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) went a combined 4-for-7 on the day, but it was not enought to keep Smith College from dropping a pair of games on  the penultimate day of their Spring Break trip, with a 5-1 defeat to the College of Wooster and a 7-1 loss to the University of New England.

In the opener against the Fighting Scots (12-4), Smith (1-5) took a third inning lead when Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) drew a one out walk and moved to second on Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius)'s sacrifice.  Pinch runner Kat Katides (Quincy, Mass./The Newman School) moved to third on Goodman's single through the left side, and scored on Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais)'s RBI single to right.

The Fighting Scots scored singles runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI hits from Erica Villa and Demi Hart, respectively, and added three more in the sixth inning.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) and Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) drew back-to-back walks in the sixth inning, and moved to third on a groundout, but were left stranded.

Goodman and Clark both went 2-for-4, while Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) struck out three in six innings of work in the circle.  Clark pitched the final inning, and did not allow a hit while notching one strikeout.

Against the Nor'easters in the second game, Smith again took an early lead.  Goodman singled in the first and took second on a passed ball.  After Beaton reached on a walk, Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) plated Goodman with an RBI single.

UNE took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on consecutive singles from Megan Gauger and Lauren Rousseau, and added two more in the second on an error and a fielder's choice.

Clark went the distance for Smith, only allowing three earned runs in six innings of work, with a pair of strikeouts.  Goodman and Tocci each finished with two hits for Smith.

Smith will close out the trip to Florida with two games on Thursday, facing Wisconsin-OshKosh and Amherst College.
