Softball Concludes Florida Trip

March 22, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--The Smith College softball team drew their Spring Break trip to a close with losses to Wisconsin Osh-Kosh (7-0) and Amherst College (14-3) on Thursday.

Facing Osh-Kosh, Smith (1-7) was limited to three hits in a shutout loss.  Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) had two of those hits, with singles in the fourth and seventh innings, and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) had the other.  Smith only managed to get runners past first base twice.

Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) struckout two in three innings of work for Smith.  Clark relieved and struck out two in four innings of relief.

Against Amherst, Smith rallied from 4-0 down to within a run, only to see the Lord Jeffs score 10 runs in the fifth inning to end the game.

The Lord Jeffs scored three unearned runs in the second inning, and added a single run in the third when Donna Leet walked and scored Idalia Friedson's double.

Smith got back a run in the third when Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third, and scored on Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon)'s single.  A two-out rally in the fifth got two more runs for the Pioneers - Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) singled and stole second base, and Goodman doubled her home.  A followup single from Clark scored Goodman to get Smith within a run.

Amherst sent 14 runners to plate in the fifth, scoring 10 runs to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Kiers allowed only one earned run in three innings, with just three hits.  Clark was touched for 10 runs (eight earned) in the final two frames.

Smith will get back in action up North on March 26, hosting Elms College at 4:00 p.m.
