NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--NEWMAC play begins for the Smith College softball team (2-8, 0-0 NEWMAC) when they make the longest trip in the league to take on the United States Coast Guard Academy (12-7, 0-2 NEWMAC) on Friday for a double header that begins at 3 p.m.


Last Meeting: Coast Guard swept a doubleheader from Smith by scores of 5-0 and 17-1 on April 3, 2011. 

Last Smith Win: Smith got a home run from Megan Keifer to earn an 11-2 win in the opener of a doubleheader against the Bears on April 19, 2008.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers fell to Western New England University 16-2 in five innings last time out.  Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) and Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) each drove in a run.

Coast Guard Overview: The Bears fell to Wheaton in their conference opener last weekend, falling 6-2 and 9-8, but bounced back with a 8-4 single game win over Trinity.  Coast Guard has spent most of the year in the national rankings, but dropped out of this week's poll.

Smith Player to Watch: Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) is 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts in her rookie season.

Coast Guard Player to Watch: Hayley Feindel has a 1.81 ERA with 106 Ks in 73.2 innings.
