Softball Swept By Coast Guard

March 30, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) went a combined 3-for-4 as the Smith College softball team was swept in a pair of five inning games by the United States Coast Guard Academy, 9-1 and 13-1, to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon.

Smith falls to 2-10, and 0-2 in the NEWMAC, while Coast Guard improves to 14-7, 2-2 in NEWMAC play.

Game One:

In game one, junior Holli Bastinck hit a two-run homer, her team leading fifth, in the first inning and that was all the Bears would need. Bastinck was 3 for 3 at the plate in the game one win while freshman Jesse Richardson had two hits and two RBI's.

Smith scored their only run in the fourth inning.  After Goodman led off the inning by popping up to second, Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) walked, and moved to second on Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s single to left.  Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) ripped a hit to centerfield to bring home Clark.

Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) struck out three in 4.2 innings of work.

Game Two:
In the second game, junior Stacia Sarwinski had a three-run double in the second as the Bears took the early lead. Coast Guard scored seven times in the fourth with Richardson blasting a two-run homer to highlight the inning.

Bastinck was 3 for 4 in game two while Sarwinski and Ward each had two hits.

Smith brokeup the shutout in the third inning - Goodman doubled to right-center to open the inning, and took third on a passed ball.  Back-to-back walks to Clark and Tocci loaded the bases for Beaton, whose RBI groundout got Smith on the board.  The Pioneers had the chance to do more damage, but Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) hit into a fielder's choice and Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) struck out to end the inning.

Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) went four innings in the circle for Smith, striking out two.
