Game Preview: Softball vs. Wheaton

April 01, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--After a 24 hour delay, NEWMAC play continues for the Smith College softball team (2-10, 0-2 NEWMAC), when the Pioneers host their conference home opener against Wheaton College (9-11, 3-1 NEWMAC) on Sunday for a doubleheader.

Last Meeting:  The Lyons swept a double header 18-0, and 10-2, on April 2, 2011.

Last Smith Win: Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI as Smith earned a split with the Lyons with a 9-0 win on April 11, 2009.

Smith Overview:  Smith opened NEWMAC play with a pair of losses (9-1, 13-1) to the US Coast Guard Academy.  Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) was a combined 3-for-4 with a double and a run over the two games.

Wheaton Overview: The Lyons have made a good start to the NEWMAC portion of their schedule, sweeping a doubleheader from Coast Guard and earning a split with Babson College on Friday afternoon. A 7-6, extra inning win in the second game of the doubleheader snapped a three game losing skid.

Smith Player to Watch: Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) is currently on a three game hitting streak, and has reached base at least twice in two of the last three games.

Wheaton Player to Watch: Jenna Rocha is hitting .317 with three homers and nine RBI this year.

Did you know? While Smith has four players from west of the Mississippi River, Wheaton has none - the Lyons only boast two players from outside New England.
